UPCOMING EVENTS

Join your fellow Florida Explorers at state-wide events that are designed to appeal to your sense of adventure and exploration and are certainly worth the trip.  Your Florida Chapter Executive Committee is committed to bringing you worthwhile events filled with meaningful fellowship with like-minded people.  Most events include our required (but efficient) Chapter meetings, an element of public interaction (often where our attending Explorers are publicly recognized), and a scientific or exploration-related VIP tour, presentation, or lecture.  Our events are designed around a few basic goals:

  • Provide a forum for current members to share and exchange research/data/ideas/etc.,
  • Make ourselves known in the community as a resource for exploration and research,
  • Be on the lookout for potential new members, and
  • Raise chapter funds where/when we can.

Register for any of the following events by clicking on the ‘Register now’ button. Registration isn’t required, but helps us to have an idea of expected attendance.

Have an event idea?  We want to hear about it – please submit your idea to our Chairman.  Check this page frequently as new events are added throughout our events season.  We look forward to seeing YOU on event day!

October 22, 2011 – MOTE MARINE LABORATORY & AQUARIUM.  Sarasota, FL.  VIP Tour and presentation/ Members’ Meeting. Details of our tour have been sent via email to each chapter member.

November 5, 2011 – BREVARD ZOO. Melbourne, FL. Enjoy a morning paddle through our wildlife preserve OR take a zipline tour of the Zoo, followed by a catered Members’ lunch, meeting*, then VIP interactive tour of the Zoo’s animal care facilities.  A presentation by Chris DeLorey (MN’09) shares what he found during his Summer 2011 expedition at Dana Quarry.  This presentation is open to Zoo patrons and the public, and attending Explorers will be recognized during the presentation (please wear any EC Member identifying regalia).  A coffee reception follows this full day of events. Special pricing on hotel accommodations available for traveling Members and their Guests.   *Members’ guests will embark on their own VIP tour of the Zoo during our meeting.

November 16, 2011 – Dr. Jerry Jackson Presentation.  Florida Gulf Coast University, Ft. Myers, FL.  Calling ALL Bird Watchers! Join your fellow members and other birding enthusiasts from around Florida to hear
Dr. Jackson (FN’78), editor of professional journals such as Journal of Field Ornithology,  North American Bird Bander, and Florida Field Naturalist, present details from his EC Flag Expedition to Cuba! This expedition’s goal was to document a remnant population of the now-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker.   Dr. Jackson is an expert on the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and he was awarded the last federally funded work to locate these woodpeckers in the United States before the species was declared extinct.

January 28, 2012 – Corkscrew Swamp Night Tour & Fireside Expedition Tales. Naples, FL.  See the Florida Everglades like never before! With the dark brush below and a blanket of stars in a moonless sky above us, we’ll build fellowship and enjoy the Swamp’s nightlife followed by campfire tales of expedition challenges.  Hosted by Dr. Mike Knight (FN’07).  Address and DIRECTIONS on Google Maps.

March 17, 2012 – The Explorers Club Annual Dinner (ECAD 2012). New York City, NY.  Last year the Florida Chapter boasted a turnout of more than one dozen members in attendance, and what a party!  But we can do better – let’s coordinate to make it to NYC for ECAD and be the Chapter with the best showing! Keep checking the HQ ECAD Event page for details.

CHAPTER FUNDS

To avoid initiating chapter dues this year, we will attempt to fund our events through a chapter fund raiser, members’ donations, and an occasional low-cost event charge to cover any meals or fees charged to the club for an event (expected not to exceed $20).

Throughout each year, our chapter incurs fees such as postage, printing, and event-related costs.  We can avoid charging annual chapter dues with your participation at events, chapter fund raisers, and donations.  Details will be distributed via email to the members.
